Bobby Knight: Indiana University's Loss is Texas Tech's Liability
When Indiana University parted ways with their head basketball coach, the question on everyone's lips was: "what will become of poor Bob Knight?" Worry no more. It seems the humanitarian, organ donor, and smear campaign victim has landed on his feet at last.
After all those terrible things about coach Knight surfaced, it seemed that no basketball program would dare take the risk. But Texas, a state known for taking a laid-back approach to physical abuse, has welcomed the former Indiana University basketball coach with open arms.
"We asked him if he could keep his temper under control, and he assured us that he could," said an unnamed Texas Tech official. "If that was good enough for Miles Brand, it's good enough for us." The school also pointed out the photographs Knight had taken of himself surrounded by puppies and small bunnies. Although the coach did not muster a smile, the publicity photos did have quite an impact on the Texas Tech selection committee.
[Collector's note: Coach Knight has also been made into a Precious Moments figurine.]
Given Knight's reputation as a bully, some on the faculty worry if he will taint the school with bad press. But administrators remain unfazed.
"This is a perfect relationship," said another unnamed school official. "He gives us championships and we don't ask any questions."
But there are potential problems with this seemingly perfect relationship. Knight's salary, although quite generous, is nothing compared to the university's increased liability insurance premium.
School administrators are hopeful that Knight can keep his temper under control. But Texas Tech boosters have already begun contributing to the Bobby Knight legal defense fund- just in case.
At a press conference on Friday, Knight's wife expressed her deep wish that her husband "open up and make some friends" at his new place of work. After some court-ordered anger management, he may end up doing just that.
